THE JOHN ADAIR CONNECTION

John Adair is one of the world's leading authorities in leadership and leadership development. Over one million managers worldwide have taken part in the Action Centred Leadership programmes he pioneered. In 1979 he became the world's first Professor of Leadership Studies when he took up the post at the University of Surrey. Shortly after, John worked with Sir John Harvey-Jones at ICI, introducing a leadership development strategy that helped the loss-making, bureaucratic giant into the first British company to make a billion pounds profit.

He has written over 40 leadership-related books, that have been translated into many languages, along with a host of articles on the subject. Recently, the People's Republic of China awarded him the title Honorary Professor, in recognition of his 'outstanding research and contribution in the field of leadership'.

In 2009, John was appointed Chair of Leadership Studies at the United Nations Staff College in Turin.

Alan Cutler, Chief Executive of Hospitality Leadership, is proud to have been invited to become one of his Senior Associates, who John has selected to work with him to promote good leadership practice. All are qualified to consult on leadership development strategy and deliver Adair Leadership training courses. Each Associate has a particular area of expertise - in Alan's case it is leadership development within the hospitality, leisure, tourism and travel sectors travel sectors.

Alan's first exposure to John's Action Centred Leadership model, characterised by the three circles above, was very early in his working life. As he is quoted on John's website:

"I remember very well, 25 years ago, sitting in a cold classroom at RAF Henlow during my 16 weeks officer training course, being taught about three overlapping circles of team, task and individual. It is no accident that I have gone full circle by choosing Action Centred Leadership as the theory used in designing and delivering team leader training to the hospitality industry. In my view, ACL is a simple approach to leadership that can be expanded to relate to any role in any sector of my industry. Not only can my trainees understand and apply it successfully in their workplaces, but being Adair Accredited Trainers, delivering and Adair course, adds considerable credibility in the minds of those that hold the purse strings."

Hospitality Leadership is delighted to be able to call upon John's advice and guidance in all aspects of its mission to promote inspirational leadership in all sectors of our industry. As John, himself, said:

"I am pleased to be able to support the work that my Associate, Alan Cutler from Hospitality Leadership Ltd, is doing to raise standards of leadership throughout his industry. I believe that Alan and his colleagues have a real contribution to make at every level of leadership"
